Smog Check in Hesperia, CA

Green Car, Clean Air — G&M Automotive Center

Why Do You Need One?

Smog checks were established in hopes of controlling the pollution our vehicles generate. In California, which is the only state that doesn’t follow the federal standard (they have their own), they expect all vehicles to go through a smog check every two years. This is due to the enormous amount of vehicles in the state (over 30 million) and because of the impact polluted air is making on both the atmosphere and people’s health.

If your vehicle is due for its next smog check, make sure you visit G&M Automotive Center in Hesperia, California. Our ASE Certified technicians will be able to quickly check if your vehicle meets the state’s strict standards. If you don’t, no worries! Our team will be able to quickly provide you with repairs, re-administer the test, and get you the certificate needed to have your vehicle registered!

California Smog Check

In California, you must go through their biennial smog certification program in order for your vehicle to get registered. Although there are some exemptions, most vehicles will have to go through the program. Here is a list of vehicles that are exempt from the smog check:

  • Gasoline Powered Vehicles — 1975 and Older

  • Natural Gas Powered Vehicles — Weight Exceeds 14,000 lbs

  • Diesel Powered Vehicles — 1997 and Older OR Gross Weight Rating of 14,000 lbs

  • Electric Vehicles

  • Motorcycles

Before visiting our shop for a smog inspection, please make sure you have your license, current registration, title, and proof of auto insurance. Once we have that in hand, we’ll start the inspection. According to California’s smog inspection standards, we will pay attention to five different gasses — Hydrocarbons, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxide, Carbon Dioxide, and Oxygen. If your vehicle does not meet the state’s standards, we’ll give you a list of issues that need to be taken care of in order to pass. Once they are taken care of, you can take the test again. If you do meet the standards, you will receive a smog inspection certificate that you can present to the DMV when you’re registering.

Depending on the condition of your vehicle, you may be qualified for the Consumer Assistance Program (CAP). For more information, please read the CAP Requirements!
